The annual President's ESH Leadership Awards recognize those ITT Industries individuals and teams that have displayed commitment, creativity and value-creation in the area of Environment, Safety and Health. This year, there were more than 50 nominations and five winners, all of whom were recognized by CEO Lou Giuliano at the ITT Industries Executive Forum meeting in early February. They are:

MSDS Application Team
Value Center: A/CD
Team Members: Sue Powe, Kari McHenry and Greg Markley

OSHA regulations require that every ITT Industries company have a system in place to ensure the safe handling and storage of chemicals used in the workplace. Over the years, every site has developed its own Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) document, designed to prevent employee exposure to unknown or dangerous chemicals and company exposure to regulatory fines for non-compliance.

The MSDS Application Team from A/CD moved ITT closer to a single, seamless MSDS document that further reduces the risk of accidents or fines. Led by Sue Powe, the team developed an online MSDS for A/CD and then upgraded it to work for multiple locations. The online tool incorporates more than 5,000 MSDS and is now being used by companies at all four management companies. It's generating $30,000 in annual savings, a total that will grow as more locations begin using this world-class MSDS application.

Reverse Osmosis Reject Water Project Team
Value Center: Night Vision
Team Members: Caudill Wright, Gene Tucker and John Highberger

In the production of its night vision goggles, Night Vision uses more than 50,000 gallons of deionized (DI) water each day. In generating this high-purity water, the company also generates a high volume of reject water, much of which goes down the drain and out of the plant.

Or at least it used to. In 2002, the Reject Water Project Team found a way to recycle the wastewater for use in the plant's cooling towers. Working with their water treatment supplier, they installed a four-point level sensor that would monitor the water levels in the cooling tower basin. By keeping the supply of city water to a minimum, the team was able to reclaim nearly 80 percent of the reject water without overflowing the basin. The result: Night Vision is reducing its requirements for city water by 5 million gallons a year, and reducing its wastewater discharge by the same amount.

Customer ESH Outreach Team
Value Center: Flojet
Team Members: Russ Davis, Jeff Melo, Scott Shimer and Jon Byrd

The impact of ESH efforts on the bottom line is often limited to cost savings and cost avoidances. But this team found a way to use ITT's ESH strengths to build sales and strengthen relations with key customers.

The team leveraged ITT's and Flojet's premier ESH performance and environmentally preferable products to differentiate us from competitors. Through research, the team determined that customers such as Coca-Cola, McDonalds and PepsiCo share many of our ESH values. For example, Coca-Cola, like ITT, is a signatory to the CERES Principles; McDonalds, like ITT, conforms to the Global Reporting Initiative; and PepsiCo, like ITT, is ranked by Innovest.

This alignment of values, as well as the fact that the Flojet beverage pumps emit less carbon dioxide than our competitors' pumps, enabled the team to meet with key decision makers at the companies and pave the way for a higher level of partnering and synergy in the future.

Mats Elgan
Value Center: Flygt

Throughout the years, a number of employees at the Flygt Lindas foundry have come down with Reynaud's Disease This ergonomic injury, also often referred to as "white fingers," was caused by employees using vibrating handtools to manually grind castings and parts for Flygt pumps.

Once Mats Elgan put his finger on the problem, he set about developing a solution. He re-engineered the entire process and re-tooled the lathes to handle more of the grinding work. Today, Flygt foundry workers are grinding 1720 fewer tons of foundry goods each year and spending 2100 fewer hours performing this physically taxing task. With a $15,000 investment in tool construction and extra machining time, Flygt is saving $175,000 a year in overall grinding expenses.

Solar Power Team
Value Center: Cannon Cablecom
Team Members: Roy Wang, Jerry Mao, James Li, Dawn Li, Kevin Huang and Jack Liu

China's rapid economic development has resulted in increased government control of energy consumption. Companies are required to find the most efficient way to provide heat, water and electricity to their on-site employee living quarters, which are a staple of Chinese industries.

The Solar Power Team took advantage of Cannon Cablecom's location in sunny South China to develop a solar power system to produce and store ample quantities of hot water for its on-site dormitories. It will only take the company 18 months to generate savings equal to its $25,000 investment. Following that payback period, Cannon Cablecom will realize 80 percent annual savings compared to standard energy utility costs. In addition, it's utilizing a clean and safe energy model, while improving the comfort and well-being of employees.
