"It was absolutely the most difficult thing I have ever done." Mark Steele's words take on added weight when you realize that this is a man who has climbed Mount Everest and skied to the North Pole. But neither of those adventures took a toll on his mind and body like the Marathon des Sables. Held in early April, this ultramarathon in Morocco covered 150 miles in six days through 120 degree heat and some of the most difficult running conditions imaginable. Steele, the president of ITT Industries-China teamed up again with his thrill-seeking partner -- Nick Hill, the newly named head of ITT Industries' Jabsco value center -- to test the limits of human endurance. "I guess you can say we both significantly advanced our thresholds of pain," says Steele. "The most difficult part was waking up at 5 a.m. with your legs so sore you can hardly stand up, feet blistered, bloodied and bandaged, and then having to run a marathon in 120-plus degree heat with a 20-pound pack." Steele and Hill weren't running just for personal pride. They raised sponsorship money that benefited a facial disfigurement charity and a homeless shelter.
