101: Profile of Sam McCoy
Bringing
Together Singapore and Sweden ... under a Scottish Name
Singapore is a city
of contrasts. Located just off the south coast of Malaysia
and just above the equator, this 250-square-mile island city lies at the
focal point of age-old trading routes, where people of different cultures
and traditions have come together for almost 200 years.
In a melting pot like this, Sam McCoy Engineering fits right in. The company
is a joint venture between businesses from Singapore and Sweden, and its
name is a Scottish adaptation of Sam Choy, the president and founder of
the company.
"In the wastewater industry, as far as submersible pumps are concerned,
we are accepted as the 'real McCoys'," says Choy.
Choy started the company in 1983 as a sales and service outfit for water
and wastewater pumps and equipment. Two years later, Flygt came on board
as a joint venture partner in an effort to build its Asia-Pacific base of
business.
"Flygt benefits from our very strong local presence in Singapore, and we
get access to their international network, which fosters technology transfer
and dissemination of technical know-how among all the Flygt companies,"
says Choy.
The partnership has enabled Sam McCoy to grow significantly. In just the
last two years, sales increased by 18 percent, with nearly one-quarter of
all revenues generated from Flygt products. Today, the company is widely
recognized as a leading specialist in the fields of pumping and water and
wastewater treatment.
Customers include contractors and government agencies - land transport authorities,
public utilities boards and public works departments - who are building
the infrastucture to support the growth that has occurred in this region,
and especially in Singapore.
Despite its small size, Singapore has grown into a thriving center of commerce
and industry. In addition to being the busiest port city in the world, it's
also one of the world's major oil refining and distribution centers and
one of the most important financial markets in Asia.
"With this growth, there is also a growing commitment to maintaining a safe
and healthy environment, and wastewater treatment plays a large part in
that effort," says Choy.
To date, thousands of Flygt pumps have been installed in most of the major
buildings and construction projects in Singapore and Malaysia. As it looks
for future avenues of growth, Sam McCoy sees potential in working more closely
with the other Fluid Technology companies under ITT Industries umbrella.
"Our priority in the coming year is to strengthen our market position by
working with other ITT companies as partners, instead of competing against
them in the marketplace," says Choy.

McCoy serves as "Flygt Singapore" in this part of the world, selling Flygt
submersible pumps and mixers to customers in Singapore and the surrounding
countries of Brunei and Indonesia where Flygt doesn't have existing sales
offices.
The company casts a wider net for its other product lines - including headworks
equipment and submersible aerators - doing business in Australia, New Zealand,
China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
In addition, it manufactures its own line of wastewater headworks and treatment
equipment, including screens, conveyors, grit classifiers, shaftless screw
conveyors, as well as a line of Flygt submersible aerators.
