FORT WAYNE, Ind., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- ITT Aerospace/Communications
Division (ITT A/CD) has won a $1.2 M contract for digital radios from Oerlikon
Aerospace, the systems integrators for the Canadian Low Level Air Defense
System. Oerlikon Aerospace chose the Near Term Digital Radio (NTDR) after
evaluations between two other contenders showed NTDR to be technically
superior, and more cost effective. NTDR is the first member of A/CD's Mercury
family of digital radios and is intended to become the backbone of the U.S.
Army's future tactical internet, which already includes the Systems
Improvement Program (SIP) version of ITT's SINCGARS.
"This is an important win for A/CD," said Dr. Barry Abzug, Vice President
of Communications Systems. "The Canadian decision is the first international
order for this state-of-the-art digital radio system which provides not only
high capacity transmission but fully autonomous tactical networking. Our
experience in developing tactical communications systems for the U.S. armed
forces and for the U.K. Bowman Program makes us an ideal partner for Oerlikon.
This initial contract calls for engineering services and 17 NTDRs to be
delivered during the first half of 1998 for use in the Canadian Low Level Air
Defense System. The NTDR system will provide mobile data links to allow quick
set up of perimeter air defenses and will maintain wireless connectivity
between air defense sensors and command authorities. The high data capacity
of the NTDR allows time sensitive target information to be acted on in real
time by the fire control computer.
NTDR systems have advanced channel access waveforms, sophisticated dynamic
mobile networking and distributed network management so large amounts of data
can be distributed at high speed to mobile users. The NTDR information
transport system is based upon leading edge commercial networking technologies
and features full Internet Protocol (IP) addressability. Its flexible
architecture and small size enables Mercury NTDR to evolve as battlespace
digital communications requirements continue to grow.
