ITT Industries Awarded $35.7 Million in Satellite Systems Contracts


       Team With Most Combined Civilian and Military Remote Sensing Experience
                        Gets the Nod to Develop NPOESS Systems
        FORT WAYNE, Ind., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- ITT Industries' (NYSE: IIN)
    Aerospace/Communications Division (ITT A/CD) has been awarded two contracts
    totaling $35.7 million to support convergence of the US military and civilian
    environmental satellites into a single satellite system.  Under a directive
    signed by President Bill Clinton in May, 1994, the US Government is converging
    the Polar Operational Environmental Satellites (POES) and the Defense
    Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) into a single National Polar-Orbiting
    Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS).  With today's awards,
    ITT A/CD and a second instrument contractor will continue the competition and
    develop preliminary system designs.  A full design and production contract
    will be awarded to one of the two contractors within the next three years.
        ITT A/CD, an operating unit of ITT Defense & Electronics located in Fort
    Wayne, Indiana, will join with partners Hughes Information Systems,
    Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER), Inc., Bomem and Ball Aerospace
    to develop preliminary designs for two critical sensor systems.  As payloads
    on the NPOESS satellites, these sensor systems will continuously monitor the
    earth's environmental characteristics for use by both civilian and military
        The Cross-Track Infrared Sensor (CrlS) will provide improved measurement
    accuracies of the vertical change in temperature and humidity as a function of
    altitude.  This data will help provide more accurate long term forecasts.  The
    second system is actually a suite of sensors called the Visible/Infrared
    Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) and will provide some 60 different
    measurements ranging from ocean temperature to thickness of cloud cover.
    These new systems and associated data processing methods are critical to a
    better understanding of the earth's environment.
        Designs for CrlS and VIRS will draw on the combined strength and technical
    breadth of the team members.  ITT A/CD has extensive experience in
    environmental sensor design, production, integrated systems development and
    operational support for POES and the Geostationary Operational Environmental
    Satellites (GOES).  Ball Aerospace designed and produced electromechanical
    systems for the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) program and
    the Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet Radiometer (SBUV).  AER provided
    algorithm development for the Tactical Nephanalysis (TACNEPH) and the Advanced
    Technology Water Vapor Retrievals (ATWR) programs. Hughes developed software
    for the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager Support and Service program (SSM/I
    S&S).  Bomem supported the development and delivery of the Michelson
    Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) for the European
    Environmental Satellite (ENVISAT).  The combined capabilities of these
    companies will yield new systems and methods to monitor the earth's
    environment with NPOESS.

    scheduled for launch before the year 2000.
