NASA Chooses ITT Defense and Electronics to Produce Next Generation of GOES Sensors

FORT WAYNE, Ind., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- NASA has selected ITT Defense
and Electronics (ITT D&E) as its sole source supplier of meteorological
instruments for the newest members of the NOAA's Geostationary Operational
Environmental Satellite (GOES) constellation. In September, ITT D&E will
    begin production on
$177M worth of sensors that will provide updated 24-hour-a-day coverage of
atmospheric conditions of the Earth's western hemisphere. Built by ITT
Aerospace/Communications Division, Fort Wayne, IN, the GOES N and O Imagers
and Sounders are cousins to the sensors on board the current GOES I and J
    series spacecraft.
The GOES Imager views the Earth from a 22,300-mile-high-orbit over the
equator, gathering critical weather data for use by forecasters tracking
severe weather patterns. Digitized pictures from the Imager are seen nightly
on most local TV newscasts. The newest version of the Imager will be on the
GOES N and O series satellite and will feature increased clarity of images and
improvements in tracking so that meteorologists will be better able to isolate
areas that may be affected by severe storms.
The ITT GOES Sounder is similar to the Imager, but provides meteorologists
with vertical views of the atmosphere measured in temperature and moisture
content at various altitudes above the Earth's surface. These measurements
are critical to understanding the formation of storms and changing weather
patterns. Together, the Imager and Sounder form the cornerstone of America's
    meteorological early warning system.
ITT D&E Imagers and Sounders have a long history of service starting with
the TIROS weather satellites. Evolutionary changes to the sensors are now on
board the POES Low Earth Orbit weather satellites and will be on board the
GOES K satellite when it is launched in April 1997. The N and O versions will
be launched in late 2001 and 2003. ITT D&E instruments will also be integral
parts of both the European and Japanese weather satellite systems.
