Third GOES Weather Satellite With ITT Defense and Electronics Sensors Placed in Orbit

FORT WAYNE, Ind., April 25 /PRNewswire/ — NASA launched America's newest
weather satellite, Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite GOES K,
from Cape Canaveral Air Station, FL at 1:49 a.m. this morning, placing on
orbit a spare satellite with the same advanced meteorological sensors as its
two sister systems monitoring the East and West Coasts of the United States.
Once in final orbit, GOES K, will be renamed GOES 10. GOES 10 and its
sisters, GOES 8 & 9, form the backbone of the U.S. early warning weather
system. That system uses two powerful sensors called Imager and Sounder built
at ITT Defense & Electronics' Aerospace and Communications Division (ITT A/CD)
in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The GOES 8 and 9 Imagers and Sounders provide
24-hour-a-day coverage of atmospheric conditions in the Earth's western
hemisphere. GOES 10 will remain on orbit to replace either of those
satellites should one fail or come to the end of its service life.
The Imagers on all 3 satellites view the Earth from a 22,300-mile-high
perch over the equator, simultaneously gathering data in one visible and four
infrared bands, or channels. Digitized pictures from the Imager are similar
to those television viewers see every evening on their local news. The
Sounders are similar in design, but provide meteorologists with a vertical
slice of the earth's atmosphere using 19 different channels. These slices
view weather conditions at different altitudes. Along with improved
synchronization with ground observations, the imagery and information from
GOES has changed forecasting of severe storms to "nowcasting" of impending
    storms to specific geographic areas.
The products from ITT A/CD'/s Imagers are so good that it allows
scientists to distinguish between ice and super-cooled water clouds that are
dangerous to commercial aviation. Its images are crisp enough to permit
tracking of individual icebergs and forest fires. Scientists like Dr. Paul
Menzel, Chief of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA)
Advanced Satellite Project, are especially impressed with the Sounder's
observations of the formation and flow of water vapor, a vital tool in weather
GOES K represents the latest in a 25 year history of providing innovative
systems for use by both NASA and NOAA. In the future, ITT A/CD will continue
to provide state of the art sensors for the next 4 GOES satellites stretching
into the next Century. The ITT A/CD Imager will also be used on the Japanese
weather satellite, MTSAT, scheduled for launch before the year 2000.
