ITT Industries' Precision Approach Radar Commissioned by Brazil - Gilfillan's PAR-2000 is First Operational System of its Kind

    7/20/1998

VAN NUYS, Calif., July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The Brazilian Air Force has
formally commissioned the first PAR-2000 precision approach radar landing
system produced by Gilfillan, a unit of ITT Industries (NYSE: IIN). With this
acceptance, the PAR-2000 became the first advanced technology active aperture
radar system in daily operation anywhere in the world. Specially equipped
Brazilian Air Force flight check aircraft validated the system's performance
to international flight safety criteria, and the PAR-2000 exceeded all key
    accuracy requirements.
Technical innovations in the PAR-2000 include highly reliable miniature
transmit/receive modules, actually mounted in the antenna, which replace
the traditional bulky central transmitter. The modular design of the systems
along with the use of the latest generation of commercial processors prevents
obsolescence. All key elements are redundant to ensure non-stop operation.
The rugged design of this system supports a variety of demanding environmental
conditions, including the high temperature and moisture conditions of Brazil.
The PAR-2000 was designed with ease of operation and system maintenance in
mind. The PAR-2000 increases controllers' awareness by providing all of
the information they need directly on the digital color displays. Training
on this user-friendly system requires two short weeks. Computer displays
ease the transition from the older system currently in use. System
maintenance training is also accomplished in only two weeks, as the system
detects and isolates its own faults and repair involves replacing boards
    instead of components.
Gilfillan is also under contract for variants of this system, including
the AN/MPN-25 mobile configuration for the U.S. Air Force that provides area
surveillance capabilities in addition to precision landing.
