Contract is to Develop Next Generation Soldier Communications
FORT WAYNE, Ind., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- ITT Industries, Inc. (NYSE: IIN)
announced today that it has won a contract for development of a Small Unit
Operations Situation Awareness System (SUO/SAS). This $46.5 million Defense
Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) sponsored program is developing
technology for next generation tactical communication, geolocation and
information systems for the U.S. military.
The SUO/SAS program integrates leading-edge communications networking with
the latest in information management techniques. DARPA expects this combined
technology could then establish a baseline for tactical communications systems
for the next twenty years. ITT Industries' Aerospace/Communications Division
(A/CD) heads a world-class team of leaders in a number of technology
disciplines that will help develop this system. The team includes BBN
Technologies (a unit of GTE Internetworking), SRI International and Rockwell-
"The award continues our leadership in robust multimedia networking that
brings integrated voice, data and full-motion video to the battlefield," said
Dr. Barry Abzug, president of ITT Industries A/CD. "Building on the
technologies of our Handheld Multimedia Terminal (HMT), SUO/SAS represents the
next step in the evolution of tactical networking by allowing soldiers in the
field to talk, exchange files and conduct videoconferences. This is a
revolutionary capability that will be delivered in a system compliant with the
emerging Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) architecture."
This contract calls for the development and field testing of several
advanced systems with technology to bring multimedia communications to early
entry forces on the battlefield. This technology will provide an order of
magnitude improvement in ground mobile communication capacity in restrictive
terrain ranging from urban settings to deserts and mountains, and against
jamming or direction finding threats. The system also incorporates
communication signal ranging techniques to provide assured geolocation
information when GPS is not available. An essential requirement is that the
terminals be compliant with the emerging JTRS architecture.
