- First Launch Scheduled for Late '99 -
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Spaceport Systems International
(SSI), a limited partnership between ITT Industries (NYSE: IIN) and California
Commercial Spaceport, Inc., officially announced the operating capability of
its Spaceport Launch Facility today in a commissioning ceremony at Vandenberg
Air Force Base.
"The nation's first commercial launch facility is open for business as a
full service Spaceport and we're ready for our first satellite launch this
fall," said Earl Severo, CEO, Spaceport Systems International. "This is an
important step to providing affordable, high quality launch services for both
the commercial and government marketplace."
The ceremony was attended by community leaders, U.S. Space industry
leaders, and by representatives from NASA and the U.S. Air Force.
Under a contract awarded by the U.S. Air Force, SSI will provide
commercial range and launch site services for payloads being jointly developed
by the U.S. Air Force Academy and Weber State University. The satellite
launch is scheduled for this fall.
SSI's launch facility is located in the southern-most corner of Vandenberg
Air Force Base and is ideally situated to support direct injection into a
broad range of polar orbit inclinations. The launch facility can handle
24 small-to medium-class launch vehicles a year, and can accommodate multiple
In addition to the launch facility, the Spaceport consists of an
Integrated Processing Facility for payload processing, and other range and
launch site services. SSI's payload processing customers include Lockheed
Martin and NASA.
