Thales announces major advancements in ADS-B offering and implementation

Thales ADS-B product line expanded to include UAT radio and ground station performance validated

Shawnee, KS, July 17, 2007 – Thales announced today the achievement of several major milestones for its Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B)1 solution. First, Thales has extended its ADS-B market leadership by announcing the launch of a Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) radio to augment their modular ADS-B product family. In addition, to further validate the offering, Thales also announced that its ADS-B ground station with integral Traffic Information Service – Broadcast (TIS-B)2 capability successfully achieved site acceptance with Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS), the organization responsible for air traffic control in Germany.

Thales is a partner on the ITT team bidding on the US Federal Aviation Administration ADS-B program. (www.itt.com/adsb) Today's announcement of the addition of the UAT radio to the overall Thales ADS-B ground station solution enhances Thales's modular ADS-B platform with the capability to provide ADS-B reception and various broadcast services for all en route, terminal or surface applications. The Thales UAT transceiver improves upon the systems currently in use by the FAA by offering twice the target processing capability and an integrated range validation function.

"The development of the UAT transceiver is a result of Thales's investment in the FAA ADS-B program and its larger commitment to this important emerging technology", stated Wayne Dohlman, President and CEO of Thales ATM, Inc. "The announcement further demonstrates our expertise in Air Traffic Management by not only meeting U.S. customer requirements, but also innovating and evolving to meet new challenges in the market."

Validation of the Thales ADS-B ground station by DFS provides another significant achievement for the overall solution. The Thales ADS-B ground station, installed in Langen, Germany, by DFS was deployed as part of the EUROCONTROL CASCADE3 project which aims to validate and implement ADS-B operations. Thales was selected by EUROCONTROL to supply multi-channel ADS-B ground stations for this project in October 2005 and has delivered 5 ground stations which are installed in Cyprus, France, Greece, Germany and Italy.

"The Thales ASD-B offering is designed for flexibility, providing ANSPs the benefits of rapid response and improved life cycle support and logistics across many different applications – particularly important in large regional deployments such as the US, central Europe and Australia," said Paul Kahn, Managing Director of Thales' Navigation and Airport Solutions Business Line." The recent successful testing in Europe as well as the ongoing operational use in Australia, demonstrates the maturity of Thales ADS-B technologies", Kahn added.

Thales ATM is a world leader in ADS-B technology and systems with orders and installations in Australia (nationwide operational coverage), Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Portugal, South Korea and Spain.

1 ADS-B is an emerging technology that allows aircraft to periodically broadcast GPS position, altitude, speed and identity information. The broadcast information may be received and processed by other aircraft or ground stations for use in improved situational awareness, conflict avoidance and airspace management.

2 TIS-B is an augmentation to ADS-B that facilitates transition from traditional radar surveillance to ADS-B by broadcasting traffic information for non-ADS-B aircraft to ADS-B aircraft enabling on-board safety and efficiency applications.

3 The CASCADE project facilitates ADS-B trials in conjunction with leading air navigation service providers and is financed jointly by EUROCONTROL and the participating civil aviation organisations.
