Global Issues
How ITT Is Making A Difference
Fresh Water Scarcity
More than 1.1 billion people lack access to safe water and 2.6 billion people lack access to basic sanitation supplies. The percentages of people at risk are higher in rural areas, but water shortages affect hundreds of millions of urban residents, as well.
With ITT water transport and treatment solutions, municipalities can move water to where it's needed most and disinfect the water so that it can be returned to the environment without harming fresh water supplies.
Global Security Needs
According to the U.S. State Department, there were nearly 14,500 terror attacks worldwide in 2007, resulting in more than 22,000 deaths. Nearly half of these attacks and more than 60 percent of the fatalities occurred in Iraq.
With ITT safety and security products, soldiers, homeland security personnel and the intelligence community can communicate securely, see at night, detect invisible hazards and help safeguard borders, property and lives.
Population Growth
There are approximately 6.7 billion people in the world today, and the global population is growing at a rate of just over 1 percent-or 75 million people-per year. That rate is down from its peak of 2.2 percent in 1963, but by 2050, the United Nations estimates the world's population will increase by 40 percent to 9.4 billion people.
With ITT pumping solutions, farmers can increase crop output and building developers and towns can deliver water efficiently to large numbers of people. With our engineered components, manufacturers can build vehicles for mass transportation.
Emerging Markets
According to the World Bank, developing countries account for 30 percent of global gross domestic product and have increased their share of global exports from 22 percent to 28 percent between 1975 and 2005. The biggest, fastest-growing emerging markets are Brazil, Russia, India and China, followed by Egypt, Mexico, Poland, South Africa, South Korea and Turkey.
With ITT's expansion into China, India, Mexico and Poland, we are bringing jobs, investments and products vital to the growth and prosperity of emerging markets.
Infrastructure Demand
The United Nations predicts that 60 percent of the world's population will be living in urban areas by 2030. Researchers estimate that it will take $20 to $30 trillion in infrastructure investments over the next few decades to deliver clean water, reliable energy, efficient public transportation and dependable communications networks.
With ITT products, construction companies can build tunnels, bridges and airports, developers can create smarter buildings, and local governments can create more robust water and wastewater systems for growing cities and towns.
