Just as a chameleon adapts to its environment, an undeniably innovative KONI shock absorber from ITT instinctively transform to suit various road conditions and driving styles.
The "driving force" behind this breakthrough is ITT's patented ACTIVE technology that helps isolate and eliminate the short, sharp road impacts that don't actually move the vehicle but do create ride harshness that is felt by the passengers. In addition, these latest KONI shocks adjust when harsh road conditions last long enough that the vehicle body needs to move. In those cases, the ACTIVE technology adapts by building more damping force to properly control the vehicle motion for improved responsiveness and safety.
While a growing number of car manufacturers are using expensive electronic and magnetic damping systems to improve their handling and comfort balance, KONI's ACTIVE technology succeeds with an all-mechanical system suited both for new vehicles and backward compatibility with existing cars already on the road.
"This has always been the challenge for both factory-installed and aftermarket shocks," says Lee Grimes, Automotive Product Manager for KONI North America. "Historically, better handling meant reduced comfort, and better comfort meant a floaty, less responsive car. Our ACTIVE technology isolates and improves both ride requirements simultaneously."
The ACTIVE technology is the latest in a long line of KONI innovations that match the car to its road and driver. ACTIVE's predecessor, Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology, controlled large body motions and cornering forces but also smoothed expansion joints and rough roads. About 70 years ago we introduced adjustable hydraulic telescoping shock absorbers. Ten years later when we entered the auto racing world, our shocks matched each of the unique machines – and brought home numerous checkered flags by giving drivers and their teams an extra edge on all kinds of tricky tracks.
