ITT makes world-class strides in sustainability efforts

Energy intensity of ITT's global operations reduced by 31 percent over five years; company commits to lowering waste and resource consumption over the next five years

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – July 14, 2010 – ITT Corporation (NYSE: ITT) today announced significant progress toward minimizing its global environmental footprint. By reducing its consumption of natural resources and generation of waste and emissions, ITT is advancing its long-held commitment to sustainability.

The company has consistently strived to safeguard the planet's climate, communities and resources and has been recognized externally for its significant progress. Over the past five years alone, ITT's global operations have:

  • Cut back overall energy consumption intensity by 31 percent.
  • Decreased intensity of electricity consumption by 33 percent.
  • Reduced generation of hazardous waste by 46 percent.
  • Eased water use by more than 27 percent for production processes and employees.
  • Lowered the concentration of greenhouse gas intensity by 51 percent, including a 46 percent drop from 2007 to 2009.

"The recent metrics demonstrate that at ITT, sustainable behavior is a key part of our organizational fabric," said Steve Loranger, ITT's chairman, president and chief executive officer. "We recognize the impact our company and our products have on the environment, and we are committed to using technologies to reduce our ecological footprint and protect our planet."

As a way of demonstrating its long-term commitment to sustainable behavior, ITT today committed to a further reduction in its consumption of electricity, natural gases, water and waste by an amount equal to fifteen percent over the next five years.

Beyond efforts to make internal operations more efficient, ITT is helping to make the aviation industry greener through innovative technology that enables airlines to conserve millions of gallons of fuel and millions of pounds of CO2 emissions every day; using technologies to help communities in water-stressed regions recycle and reuse every drop of water; and measuring and monitoring greenhouse gas emissions using laser-based radar technology. Additionally, through ITT's signature corporate citizenship program, ITT Watermark, the company works with its non-profit partners — Water For People, Mercy Corps and the China Women's Development Foundation — to provide safe water, sanitation and hygiene education to children and families in water-stressed regions of the developing world and to provide support in the aftermath of crises.
