WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 14, 2011 — ITT (NYSE:ITT) unveiled at the Defence & Security Equipment International (DSEi) show in London a new technology that will provide a step-change in power generation for the military. The CRUX (an acronym for Create, Regulate, Utilize, eXport) generator, which utilizes proprietary technology from ITT partner Magnetic Applications, Inc., is the first product that can provide military vehicles with the power of a tow-behind generator in the footprint of a conventional alternator.
The CRUX generator reached a major milestone in mid-August when it was selected to participate in a demonstration of capability at the U.S. Marine Corps Experimental Forward Operating Base (ExFOB) in Twentynine Palms, Calif. Capable of producing up to 1,000 amps of power at low engine rotation, the CRUX generator more than doubles the power output of conventional alternators.
The CRUX generator earned high marks for fuel efficiency and power delivery at ExFOB, where the system underwent a series of rigorous tests in very harsh desert conditions. During four days of testing, the CRUX generator ran continually for up to eight hours and consistently supplied high power output, while using less than a single tank of fuel.
“The integration of the CRUX generator into military vehicles will allow for more available power for mission-critical equipment such as counter-improvised explosive device systems, communication systems and weapon systems that keep military personnel safe,” said Ron Gordon, vice president and general manager of ITT’s power solutions business. “As the military struggles to limit risk and protect the force through assured power supplies, it continually seeks out revolutionary improvements in vehicle power management. The CRUX generator aligns perfectly with this mission, and the successful testing at ExFOB brings us one step closer to getting more power to our troops.”
The CRUX generator will be on display at DSEi Sept. 13-16, 2011, at ITT stand S5-365. For photo, click here.
