Company wraps up month-long volunteer campaign in honor of global water needs
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., April 22, 2011 — Today, on Earth Day, when millions come together to recognize the world's most pressing environmental issues, ITT Corporation (NYSE: ITT) culminates a month of volunteer activities in support of a growing environmental crisis: the global need for clean water. These efforts align with the 2011 Earth Day theme, "A Billion Acts of Green," which aims to inspire environmental service and advocacy around the world. From World Water Day (March 22) to Earth Day, thousands of ITT's global employees rallied around the company's corporate citizenship program, ITT Watermark, created to provide and protect safe water and sanitation resources for children, families and communities in need.
"Water is not only key to ITT's business; it is also a critical environmental issue," said Steve Loranger, ITT chairman, president and chief executive officer. "Rallying one of our strongest assets — our employees — around ITT Watermark in a month-long celebration of volunteerism allows us to activate our entire company in support of the global need for clean water."
During this celebration, known at ITT as Global Impact Month, employees worldwide donated their time and talent to support environment- and water-related issues in local communities. In 2011, thousands of employees participated in ITT Watermark fundraising, awareness and volunteer events. Activities ranged from a water-themed essay contest in India and a silent auction in Sweden, to a water awareness session in China and a "water walk" at ITT's headquarters in White Plains, New York. In total, local fundraising events, combined with individual employee donations, generated more than $360,000 to support ITT Watermark's response to water-related needs in Japan.
ITT's Global Impact Month is a key employee engagement element of ITT Watermark, which continues to be recognized as a best-in-class employee volunteer program. On March 17, ITT was recognized by JustMeans and The Financial Times with a Social Innovation Award for Best Employee Engagement Strategy. The international awards program, considered one of the top honors in the field of corporate responsibility, recognizes companies implementing groundbreaking strategies and programs that drive social and environmental innovation.
