WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Nov. 15, 2013 — ITT Corporation (NYSE: ITT) today announced that it is continuing its ongoing partnership with Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA) by providing funding for an energy infrastructure project in Mekelle, Ethiopia.
ITT’s contribution will help fund a project to improve the electrical infrastructure at the Mekelle School for the Blind. The redesigned system will better distribute the school’s limited power supply and will correct safety concerns associated with inadequate wiring and aging circuit breakers. The renovation, which is being led by students and faculty at the EWB-USA Washington University chapter, also includes the installment of an outdoor lighting system, improving safety on campus.
"It’s exciting to continue our work with Engineers Without Borders USA and further develop our ongoing partnership with the organization, especially as we celebrate National Philanthropy Day," said Jenny Schiavone, ITT’s chief communications officer. "Engineering is at the core of who we are and what we do, so we are pleased to have the opportunity to support this project, which will have such a positive impact within this community."
EWB-USA is an organization that partners with communities around the globe to develop sustainable solutions for basic infrastructure needs. ITT announced its official partnership with the organization in April 2013.
"We are thrilled that ITT has chosen to support this vital project being led by our Washington University chapter," said Cathy Leslie, executive director of EWB-USA. "The group has had a presence in Mekelle since March 2011, working with local residents to make improvements to the town’s infrastructure needs. ITT’s support will help strengthen the chapter’s commitment to the community and aid in the execution and sustainment of this important project."
Implementation of the project is planned for January 2014.
