ITT expands aerospace product portfolio to deliver more customized, reliable solutions
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y., July 9, 2014 – ITT Corporation (NYSE: ITT) is highlighting new vibration isolation and motion control technologies for the aerospace industry at the 2014 Farnborough International Air Show, July 14-20. In response to the growing need for lighter weight, durable vibration isolation and motion control solutions, ITT has launched two breakthrough technologies and has expanded the breadth of its product portfolio to offer improved system reliability and efficiency.
ITT's Selective Lift-Assist System lightens the amount of force needed to lift large, drop-down stowage bins in modern aircraft, providing crew and passengers with a safer, more comfortable flying experience, and enabling manufacturers to create stow bins with increased luggage capacities. The new system utilizes a selective spring actuator to reduce the force needed to lift and close a fully loaded stow bin, and weight-compensating hydraulic rate controls to precisely control the opening motion of the stow bin regardless of the weight in the bin. Because the system is hydro-mechanical, the bin control system does not require aircraft power to function, decreasing installation time and increasing efficiency.
"Aerospace manufacturers are continually looking for new ways to improve the flying experience, and we have both a rich legacy and a strong ongoing pipeline of innovation and technologies to help them achieve their goals," said Munish Nanda, president of ITT's Control Technologies business. "We offer customers unique solutions to their most critical challenges, and they count on us for our product and process expertise."
For fuselage mounted equipment, ITT's patented Strut Integrated Isolator technology incorporates a fail-safe elastomeric cartridge directly in a strut, eliminating the need for separate elastomeric mounts. The isolator cartridge can be placed in each leg of a multi-leg assembly to easily control system dynamics. This solution delivers on performance, simplicity and weight, while giving OEMs the flexibility to reduce the maintenance needs of their equipment installations.
At Farnborough, ITT is also highlighting several new expanded technologies including laminate planar mounts that offer a high-load capacity in a small package for vibration isolation on helicopter power transmissions and engine mounts. ITT is also showcasing its latest innovations in temperature-tuned elastomers, engineered to provide specific characteristics in aerospace applications.
ITT components can be found on major aircraft platforms from the largest commercial transports to business jets, helicopters and all manner of military aircraft and land vehicles. A portion of ITT's business is also focused on supplying aftermarket services for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft to meet the airlines' critical needs of updating equipment and keeping planes running safely and efficiently.
